Actions speak louder than words Print

When government keeps tooting its own horn about what wonderful things it is doing for us, we need to do more than merely accept their claims. Case in point: Mayor Beth Lothers got a nearly full-page story on the cover of the latest Nolensville Dispatch titled, "Nolensville Success Story." So, okay, we have some sidewalks now that go to the Nolensville Elementary School. The article alludes that this could make children more fit, less obese. Right. Perhaps a few kids will walk, but most will continue to either be picked up by a school bus at the end of their driveway or else mom or dad will drive them to and pick them up at school. I must say, however, that it is good to see sidewalks finally in some areas of our community. When I moved here 13 years ago I was amazed that there weren't any!

Beginner Strings Classes … Parents’ meeting Sept. 9!

6pm at the Nolensville First United Methodist Church

The Williamson County Youth Orchestra (WCYO) is expanding its programming to offer beginner strings classes starting in the 2010-2011 school year. The Beginner Reading (Strings) Orchestra is for students in 3rd through 5th grades who have little or no previous instruction on violin, viola, and/or cello.

Learning to play an instrument and belonging to an orchestra opens up a whole new world of friendship and fun! Orchestra provides a great foundation for children in all aspects of life. In addition to music, students learn self-discipline, group cooperation, problem solving, goal setting, self-expression, memory skills, concentration, poise, enhanced physical coordination, high self-esteem, and the importance of teamwork – skills in great demand.Like all the arts, music has a profound effect on the academic success of students as well.

Musical chairs in Nolensville government Print

musical chairsWriting of the coming elections in an August 22, 2010 edition of The Tennessean, Josh Adams said, "In Nolensville, two incumbents hoping to be returned to office are asking voters to play a game of musical chairs." (Read the full story here.) I'm glad he said that because I doubt that the large percentage of voters in Nolensville have the slightest clue about what's really going on in this year's elections. There is a major power-play on, and if those who are running for office and pretending to be ignorant of each others ploys have their way, Nolensville will cease to belong to you and me, and these alleged public servants will be able to railroad their agendas through virtually unhindered.

If you haven't heard yet, current alderman Jimmy Alexander is on the ballot for mayor, and current mayor Beth Lothers is on the ballet for alderman—a flip-flop, or "musical chairs" as Adams put it. When Adams' story went to print, Jimmy Alexander was away on vacation, and Adams quoted Lothers saying, "He will probably come back and be shocked that I am running for alderman." I doubt it. Alexander will pretend to be surprised, but don't let the act fool you. Alexander has his eyes on the chair, and Lothers' run for alderman is no accident.
