Outside of his first six months on the job as a firefighter, Presley Hughes has been the Fire Chief for 37 years. In an excellent article by Vicky Travis (The Tennessean) she writes:
At 64, Presley Hughes has decided it's finally time to step down as chief of the Nolensville Volunteer Fire Department. "We've got some good, young, capable people," Hughes says, "It's time for them to spread their wings."
An icon of old school Nolensville, Hughes is able to proudly say "We've never missed a call since 1973." That is huge, and Hughes in his typical manner understates the importance. In his tongue-in-cheek type of humor, when asked what the NVFD won't rescue, Hughes said cats in trees, "I tell them I've never seen a cat carcass in a tree."
Chief Hughes will be missed, but I doubt he won't still show up on calls now and then.
Look for Vicky's full article in this week's edition of the Brentwood Journal. It should have been in your driveway this morning.
