It's Not About the Turkey Print

I overheard someone say‚ "Why would I want to fly two thousand miles just for a meal?" Why? Indeed! Another person when asked by her sister if she and her husband could come for Thanksgiving, was told that they were already invited to friends for Thanksgiving. Turns out, they were not ‚"invited to friends," they were having friends to their house and didn't want the sister and brother-in-law to come. What is the real reason for Thanksgiving?

When you think about it, every trouble in the world, every motivation, even the essence of greed has to do with acceptance and love or the lack of love. It's a classic commonly stated truth that new born babies will die if they don't receive love. Mothers and nurses schedule regular times to hold, cuddle, and talk to the babies. From our birth and until we die of old age, we all want to be loved. In a sense, if we are not loved, then we die like the babies but in a more prolonged way. Did she die of alcoholism or lack of love? Did he become a workaholic and strive for power and political office because he was not loved? Was he working to be loved by the voters? What makes Sammy run? In many cases, our health and motivations are for love. What does this have to do with Thanksgiving?

As tradition states, the Pilgrims after being saved from starvation by the Indians, decided to have a feast to give thanks to God and the Indians for their salvation. They invited all their family, friends, and especially the Indians. Through a feast and communion with one another, they were thanking for their blessings and life and the joy of life. They were thanking for abundance and health. And they were thanking for no starvation, or disease, or war with the Indians. You could say another name for blessings is love. They were thanking both God and the Indians for love, the same kind of love that the baby receives-- warmth, food, and caring. Thanksgiving, then, is a holiday to thank for love and blessings. But the feast and the communion with family, friends and especially our potential enemies, is a time set aside to consciously and indeed to give love, acceptance, and blessings to one another.

So it's not about the turkey, it's not about the meal; it's about having communion with family, friends and yes, potential enemies in order to build more loving relationships. It is worth the two thousand mile flight.

Many families are dysfunctional. If you belong to such a family, then don't despair, celebrate Thanksgiving with friends or by volunteering in a soup kitchen. Everyone needs love including you. The best way to receive love is to give love.
